Tormented by intrusive thoughts, soon-to-be father LaMorne Jeffries compulsively turns himself in to St. Louis County’s Roseville Police Department for crimes they know he did not commit, his saving grace a lifelong friendship with veteran Police Captain Alice McCarrick (it’s St. Louis, they went to high school together). When McCarrick runs out of harebrained schemes to thwart his disruptions and finally lands on a mental health intervention, LaMorne’s initial glimpse of healing attracts the interest of an ambitious New York Times reporter, culminating in an ultimatum that will either destroy LaMorne’s recovery or end McCarrick’s career.

When a prestigious Midwestern university appoints Dr. Bev Odom the first Black female dean of its law school, she earnestly sets to work addressing the school’s multi-pronged financial and PR crisis … until her entitled communications director discovers the administration’s true motive behind her appointment. Will Bev successfully galvanize her band of misfit staff (including her executive assistant/former porn star and permanently frazzled head faculty coordinator) to stabilize the law school and expose the administration? Or will the university’s obsession with rankings, donations, vain prestige, and legacy continue to rule supreme, as it has since the dawn of academic time?
